Weekly Wrap

May 16th-22nd, 2016

I am joining the Weekly Wrap hosted by Holly from HoHo Runs and Tricia from MissSippiPiddlin. The Weekly Wrap is a blog link up where bloggers share their active lifestyle and other exciting things weekly. To find out more, click on the image below. Feel free to join in on the fun.

I am currently not training for anything. I will begin training for the Pensacola Marathon (my third marathon) in July. For now, I am trying to stay in a routine of running 4-5 days a week and doing a long run of 1+ hours on the weekends. I hope this will help me ease into my training in a little over a month.

Monday, May 16th

My husband surprised me with an indoor bike trainer a few weeks ago. I got my slightly used Trek bike from his co-worker a little over a year ago and I feel guilty that I haven't ridden it much. I'm not comfortable riding on the open road alone and doing the same loop around the neighborhood gets old. Most people bring their rides indoors during the winter months. I feel silly bringing my ride indoors as everyone is headed outside. At least I'll get more use out of my bike with the trainer. I plan to ride 30 minutes to an hour on cross training days.

I rode for 30 minutes on Monday. I used a wired bike computer purchased on Amazon to track my time and mileage. Then, I entered my stats into my Garmin Connect account.

Tuesday, May 17th

I ran five miles on Tuesday morning. It rained on me during the first mile, but luckily it was just a short, pop up shower. There was rain in the forecast all week. I hoped it wouldn't affect my runs.

Wednesday, May 18th

I ran four miles on Wednesday morning. There was a light drizzle at the end of my run, but the rain held off. Thank goodness!

My new Spandits! Inferno print Boardies came in the mail Wednesday afternoon. I was so happy to receive them in time for my race on Saturday. These 7' spandex shorts are super cute and comfy. If you're interested in trying them you can use code SPANDITSLOVE to save 10%.

Thursday, May 19th

I ran four miles on Thursday morning. I got caught in another pop up shower, but it helped cool things off.

Friday, May 20th

I took a rest day on Friday in preparation for my race on Saturday.

Saturday, May 21st

I ran the Jubilee Run for Cancer 8K on Saturday morning. This was my third year running this race in memory of my brother and both of my grandmothers who lost their battles to cancer and in honor of my mother and grandfather who are both cancer survivors.

It was a humid and hilly race through downtown Montgomery. My time was 43:43, only eight seconds from a new PR. If I had known I was so close I wouldn't have walked on that last hill. You can't PR them all. I was happy to place 1st in my age group. It was also nice to see Valerie (@icecreamrunner)  again. Although she's ran many races, this was her first 8K. She had an awesome race and placed 2nd in her age group.

I'll post a full race recap and more pictures soon.

I had another exciting mail day on Saturday. My Spandits! team uniform arrived! I really wasn't expecting it so soon. Doesn't it look great?

We didn't have time to go fishing Saturday afternoon. My husband's cousin is getting married in two weeks and we had to attend a Couple's Shower Saturday night. It was a beautiful place for a shower overlooking the river. Michael hates taking pictures, but I was able to talk him into taking just one with the river in the background. It's not that often that I get dressed up and put on make-up.

Sunday, May 22nd

I took my new Spandits! gear for a test run this morning. This long run was tough, but I felt comfortable and confident in my new Spandits! Boardies and tank.

I ate lunch and took an afternoon nap after my run. Then, I stuffed my students end of the year goodie bags with sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and sunglasses. I can't believe we only have three and a half days left before summer break. I will see most of my students again next year since I have them Kindergarten through 4th grade in the multi disabilities unit. I have two 4th graders leaving me this year to go to the middle school. It is going to be sad to let them go. I've gotten so attached. Needless to say this is going to be an exciting, but emotional week ahead.

How was your week?

Did you run any races?

When do your kids get out for summer break? Do you have big plans while they're out of school?

  1. I keep up with your runs on FB but I'm so glad to see your back at it with a weekly wrap. I can tell you are loving the new duds! I met Valerie in Montgomery and I hope to get to visit with her again when we run the MS Gulf Coast race in December. We are both staying at the same RV Park. Have you thought of doing that race?

    1. It's great to be back with the Weekly Wrap. You and Valerie remind me a lot of each other with your adventures in the RV. That should be a fun trip in December. I've seen that race advertise on FB. It looks like it's going to be a nice one. I will have to wait and see how I recover from Pensacola in November.

  2. Great job Debra. I know that hilly 8k is hilly (ha!) and it was very warm and humid that morning. I was a weak little chicken. I looked for you on the lake that afternoon. I thought you might be fishing with the hubs. The Spandits are very cute. As a teacher, you do not get all the credit and thanks you deserve. I can only imagine teaching kids with disabilities would be even more demanding. I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing summer. Maybe I'll see you on the water! Thanks for linking.

    1. Thank you, Holly! When I stepped outside the humidity almost took my breath away. I might would have chickened out too if I hadn't preregistered. I hate we didn't get to go fishing Saturday, but it wasn't worth loading everything up for a only a few hours. We don't like to feel rushed when we go. I saw your skiing pic on IG. Maybe we will see you out there this summer. I am going to miss my students, but I am looking forward to summer.

    1. Thank you, Jennifer! I just wish I discovered Spandits! sooner. My students love doing bubbles and sidewalk chalk at school, so I figured that would be perfect for their goodie bags.

  4. Your week sounds like mine with the rain lol! I'm so sorry you've had so much cancer in your family. I think that is great that you run in honor of those you have lost. Congrats on your time and on an almost PR! I love your Spandits shorts! They are so colorful!! Have a great week!

    1. Thank you, Tara! Hopefully one day they will find a cure for all cancers. It affects so many families. I really wasn't paying much attention to my Garmin (for a change)and when I discovered how close I was to a PR it was too late. There's always next time. I wish I had discovered Spandits! sooner. I can't wait to try their capris this fall. Hope you have a good week too!

  7. Thank you, Karen! I hate Michael doesn't like to take pics. This was our first picture this year and it's May...lol. I guess that's a typical man though. I wish I had discovered Spandits! sooner. I can't wait to try their capris this fall. I hope you get some sunshine soon. All that rain must be miserable.

  8. That's great that you were able to do the 8k in memory of your loved ones. My grandma passed of cancer too. We are having several 5K races in our area to benefit Relay for Life and I'm hoping to do at least one of them.
So nice of you to make goodie bags for your students. I'm sure they appreciate it!

    1. This run actually benefitted our local Relay for Life as well. I think $20,000 was raised through the race and fundraising efforts. It is a wonderful cause.

    1. Thank you, Diane! I'm trying my best to just stay in a routine. Last summer I had a hard time staying motivated and it really affected me when I started marathon training last fall.

  10. The bike trainer sounds like the perfect gift! And congrats on the 1st place age group finish :) This sounds like a really meaningful race and that's wonderful that you were able to do it in honor of your family members.

  11. Such cute spandits!

Congrats on running a good race despite the weather.

No kids, so I never even think about when the school year ends -- but it's not til June, I think. It's just nice not having to worry about getting out of my neighborhood at certain times, as we live right down the road from a Junior & Senior high.

    1. Thank you, Judy! I'm sure you do notice a huge difference in traffic during the summer months. We live close to the schools around here. That traffic can be crazy!

  12. Congratulations on winning your AG and on coming so close to PRing! You know you will crush your PR the next time around, for sure. It's so meaningful to run races in honor of loved ones. The Spandits are adorable! How exciting that you got a new indoor bike trainer and isn't it a great feeling to NOT be training for anything specific? FREEDOM!!!

    1. Thank you! I'm hoping to do another 8K on Labor Day weekend if we stay in town. That distance isn't offered much around here. I enjoying the bike trainer more than I thought I would. It is nice to not feel confined to a specific plan for the next month or so.

    1. Oh wow! I thought our break was short. Teachers go back Aug. 1st and the students go back a week later on the 8th. Best wishes to your son as he transitions to the high school this fall.

  17. Congrats on 1st place in AG! That's awesome! I can't believe my youngest will be graduating from preschool next Wednesday. He'll be in full day kindergarten next year. My 8 yr old still has a few weeks left before school's out.

  18. Nice job on the 1st place AG! Way to go! Are you doing anything special over summer break? My mom was a teacher and department head, so she had to go back to school throughout the summer to do work, but at least she had most of the summer to herself.

    1. Thank you, Elizabeth! I am going to teach summer school the month of June. It's Mon-Thur. until noon. It's worth the extra pay. I would be bored to tears if I didn't do something in the summer. We'll probably make a trip to the beach and do some fishing on the lake.

  19. Great job on the 8K! That's an awesome finish time ;-) I play some many mind games with myself when it comes to walking/not walking in a tough race (or on a big hill, etc.). If I'm totally beat, I know I can walk a short clip faster than running it....but the temptation to keep pressing on is overwhelming.

    1. Thank you, Kimberly! I was doing good about the hills until the last big one within a half mile from the finish. I started out running it, but then I walked the final steps to the top. I looked at my Garmin when I reached the top and realized how close I was to a PR, but by then it was too late.

  20. I think that's a great plan you have in place leading into marathon training! It won't be a shock to your body that way and you'll just roll right along with it instead of having to adjust. Great job on your 8K!! Your new Spandits stuff is really cute!
