I am currently training for my second marathon at St. Jude Memphis this December. I just completed Week 12 of Hal Higdon's Novice 2 Marathon Training Plan. I will recap my training and other highlights from my week here in the Weekly Wrap.

Monday, October 19th

Monday was a day of rest on my training plan. I enjoyed my extra hour of sleep this morning. My legs were still extremely tired and sore from my half marathon on Sunday. I was so excited about my new PR. It was tempting to go to school and tell everyone, but I know most people don't know or even care what an accomplishment running a sub 2:00 half marathon was for me. I thought I'd save the details for my race recap. I had a good day back with the students. I enjoyed the week off, but I was glad to get back into a routine.

Tuesday, October 20th

I ran 5 miles at an easy pace this morning. It was in the 40's and chilly outside. I broke out my capris and long sleeves. It gave me an excuse to wear my new Varsity Sports shirt that I got this past weekend.

Wednesday, October 21st

I had an 8 mile mid week semi long run on the schedule for this morning, but I didn't wake up in time for it. Instead, I ran another 5 miles at an easy pace.

Thursday, October 22nd

I ran my mid week semi long run of 8 miles at marathon goal pace. I can't believe how fast this training is going. I only have one more mid week long run left on my plan! I'm so glad because it's a struggle getting the miles in before school, and I have no energy left after school.

Friday, October 23rd

Friday was another scheduled rest day for running. I went with my Kindergarteners on a field trip to the Pumpkin Patch. It was a lot of fun! I was exhausted afterwards. I came straight home and took a nap before Michael got home.

Saturday, October 24th

I did my 18 mile long run this morning. I think every runner has at least one run during their training cycle that makes them question, "Why did I sign up for this?" Last year, it was my 20 miler. Hopefully, I got that run out of the way early today. It was a struggle, and I'm so glad it's behind me. I think my legs probably haven't fully recovered from going all out in my half marathon on Sunday. Plus, I didn't fuel every 5 miles like I've practiced. I only ate my Honey Stingers on Mile 6 and 12, twice versus three times. My legs were shot by mile 15.

I soaked in my Epsom salts and relaxed afterwards. It was tough to stay awake during the Bama game. That was a boring game and it had me worried towards the end. Bama pulled out the win although it wasn't pretty at times. Roll Tide!

Sunday, October 25th

I got my hour cross training in today, which doesn't happen that often. I need to get better about riding my bike because I can feel the difference when I do. I rode for 45 minutes, which was only 8 miles. I lack confidence, so I ride slow. Then, I took Allie for a walk around the block. I still made time for my Sunday afternoon nap before cleaning house and doing the laundry.

That's a wrap! I hope everyone had a great week!

  1. The pictures from the pumpkin patch are so pretty. I took my grandson once and just one child wore me out, I can't imagine a whole class. Although injury is the worst, I am really enjoying my bike. My ride today was simply wonderful (yesterday was too hot!). The more you ride, the more comfortable you get. You've done great with your training and 18 miles should feel tough, especially after a sub 2 half! LOL. I thought the Bama game was stressful. Too close for comfort. Thanks for linking up with us!

    1. Thank you! I have a 19 and a 20 left with cut back weeks in between. Hopefully those will go smoother. You're doing awesome on your bike! You've put more miles on your bike this week than I have in the year I've owned mine...lol. That Bama game was nerve wrecking at the end. Thank goodness for that fumble to put away the game!

  2. Debra your kilin your training runs! It was cold here too and I enjoyed being able to breathe better on my morning runs. What fun pictures from the pumpkin patch I love the hay bales! They are getting so creative with them these days! I've seen the huge spiders they make out of them. Sundays are the best for naps! I'm glad you got to enjoy your bike, I'm like you I ride slow. Course I only have a mountain bike from Walmart but still it's a workout! Thanks for joining us this week. I am so looking forward to Memphis, I just made reservations at a campground across the river in AR so I'm ready for it to be here!

    1. Thank you! I enjoyed the cooler weather. I just wish it was here to stay. It warmed up by the weekend. I'm excited for St.Jude! It will be here before we know it!

  3. Hang in there on the long run. I agree that everyone has a bad one. My very first marathon I developed ITBS leading up to my peak long run. I couldn't finish 20 miles. I had to cut it short and walk the last bit to get home after 18. I was terrified I wouldn't be able to run the marathon. But I did. I think I owe a debt of gratitude to the lady handing out ibuprofen around mile 18, though :) I love those sunflower pictures! Sounds like that was a fun day. And I always love seeing people cycling. It does help. My 14 year old son cycled with me all summer and didn't run much (I get worried about excess volume at that age). He ended up PR'ing the 5K by over 3 minutes in cross country this fall. I'm sure some of that is due to being 14. But cycling probably helped as well!

    1. Thank you! I only have two more tough long runs a 19 and a 20 with cut back weeks in between. I need to be more consistent on the bike. I can feel the difference when I ride, but I don't ride nearly as often as I should to reap the benefits.

  4. That pumpkin patch looks like a lot of fun. I love fall because of activities like a pumpkin patch and apple picking. Our weather is finally feeling like fall and I love it.

    1. I love pumpkin patches! My husband proposed to me at a pumpkin patch three years ago. Although, it wasn't this same one. Our weather is crazy here in the south. I wore long sleeves and capris during the week, but I was back in shorts and a tank by the weekend.

  5. Congrats on your recent half marathon PR! I know exactly what you mean about wanting to talk about your race to others, but non-runners just don't care! I know that when they ask me how my race went, they are really hoping I just say "good" ha ha. Anyway, looks like a solid week of workouts. Did you follow a Hal Higdon plan for your first marathon too? Have a great week!

    1. Thank you! I did follow Hal Higdon's Novice 2 for my first marathon. I love his plans! I've tweaked it more this go round, flip flopping a few weeks this month to accommodate races.

  6. Wow, sounds like a great week. Not sure I could manage a long run during the week. I schedule them for Saturday, so I can rest up (and eat guilt free) the rest of the weekend !

    1. Hal Higdon puts one mid week and on the weekends. The mid-week one is usually 7 or 8 miles. I've gotten used to it, but I'm definitely looking forward to a break. I agree about the eating guilt free part. I splurge on the weekends.

  8. Looks like a good week of training! I love riding my bike for cross training. Sometimes you just have to.

I bet your kindergarteners loved the minion hay bales!

    1. Thank you! I bought my bike from a woman my husband works with just two weeks after finishing my first marathon. I had marathon blues and was looking into trying something new. My feet were strapped and I fell off my first time riding, so I've been a little fearful of it. I'm slowly building my confidence. I've only owned coasters before this one. Those hay bales were really cute! The kids did love them!

  9. You had a great week! Looks like you're having a gorgeous fall too. I love the sunflowers. Ours are long dead as we had a frost but it's still pretty out. I had to break out the long sleeves and capris as well. Love this weather for running!

    1. Thank you! The leaves are really just beginning to change here. Our weather is crazy! I was in long sleeves during the week then back in shorts and tank tops by the weekend.

  10. Sounds like a great week of training! I had fun going to my son's preschool field trip at the pumpkin patch! Great job on your 18 miler after your half marathon race the week before!

  11. Thank you! The pumpkin patch was so much fun! I'm just glad that 18 miler is behind me. I hope my 19 and 20 go smoother.

  12. I'm curious what you think of the Epsom salt baths....I don't have the patience (or the time) to sit and soak. Good luck on your upcoming marathon!!!

    1. I feel like it makes a difference. Sometimes I like to soak the night before my long runs and again afterwards. I enjoy relaxing and soaking, so it's a nice treat for me.

  14. Thank you! My legs felt like lead, especially on my long run. I only ran two 10K's and a 5K on my first marathon training cycle last year. I didn't really factor in the recovery time for the half. I've got one more half in November, but I plan to take it slow. My training plan calls for one pace run a week and the others are supposed to be at an easy pace. I have to be disciplined to slow down. Sometimes I want to push my pace, but I worry if I do I might get injured. I read about your stress fracture. I'm sorry that happened. I know you must have been disappointed. I'm a firm believer in everything happens for a reason. When the time comes for a future attempt, I'm sure you'll be smarter and stronger because of it.

  15. Isn't it funny how it can feel good to go back to work? As much as I love time off and vacation time, it feels good to have a routine, too.

Good job getting in another week of training, and especially getting that long run done. I'm sure your legs were still probably pretty tired from your PR half just 6 days prior. Good practice for the marathon, though!

    1. I enjoy a break every once in a while, but I like staying busy. I work through my summers to keep me going. I've lifeguarded and just recently I started teaching summer school.

Thank you! It was definitely tough picking up my training after running that half.

  16. Nice job on your training! And you pretty much summed up why I blog and have a FB page...no one outside of running gets our accomplishments! A sub 2hr half is huge! Congrats!
