I am currently training for my second marathon at St. Jude Memphis this December. I just completed Week 13 of Hal Higdon's Novice 2 Marathon Training Plan. I will recap my training and other highlights from my week here in the Weekly Wrap.

Monday, October 26th

Monday was a rest day on my training plan. The students were rambunctious! It was raining in addition to a full moon, Red Ribbon week, and Halloween. I didn't believe my professors when they talked about full moons and changes in barometric pressure affecting students' behavior. I never imagined it would make much difference. I'm in my 7th year of teaching, and now I can tell when it's a full moon without looking outside.

Tuesday, October 27th

I ran 5 miles at an easy pace this morning. It was a tough run mainly because of the 15-25 mph wind gusts. I felt like I would fall right over if I stopped moving. I was thankful that the rain held off.

Wednesday, October 28th

I ran 5 miles at my marathon goal pace. I didn't have a mid-week semi long run on the plan for this week. Woohoo! It never fails, the day I head out the door in my new shoes and no hat, it rains! Tuesday I was prepared and I missed the rain. I got a little wet, but it helped cool me off.

Thursday, October 29th

I ran another 5 miles on Thursday. It was good running weather, no wind, no rain, and temps in the 50's.

Friday, October 30th

Friday was a rest day for running on my training plan. We had a Halloween snack at school. Michael made pumpkin rice crispy treats for my students. They loved them! I loved them, too.

Saturday, October 31st

I  ran my 19 mile long run faster than I should have on Saturday morning. I ran based on feel, and I only checked my Garmin at every mile. I felt great, and when I feel great it's hard to force myself to slow down. This run was a real confidence booster after last week's struggle. I just hope I can maintain this pace in a month from now at St. Jude.

Sunday, November 1st

I've had a lazy day. It was cloudy and rainy here. I watched the NYC Marathon. Then, I cleaned house while Michael went grocery shopping.

That's a wrap!

Did you do anything fun for Halloween? Did you watch the NYC Marathon today?

  1. Halloween is not big here, so besides seeing kids dressed up, nothing major happens. 5 trick or treaters came. That's it.
    Those treats look yummy !

    1. We didn't have many trick or treaters this year either. It was a quiet night actually.

  2. Congrats on your awesome long run! I say embrace the days when your body feels great. I think we are more prone to injury when we run at paces that are not feeling natural (both speedwork and running much slower than our typical pace) so I think your approach made sense!

    1. Thank you! That long run was a real confidence boost.

  3. At work, we can always tell when it's a full moon at work. We get the craziest phone calls. I can't imagine adding little kids and Halloween into the mix! I completely forgot about watching the NYC marathon. I think I was so frustrated about losing my phone and being sold the wrong one! You had a great long run and I know you'll have a wonderful race. Also, do you really put pumpkin in the rice krispies? Thanks for linking with us!

    1. I almost forgot to watch it myself. Michael flipped the channel to ESPN 2 and I think he regretted it right away...lol. I watched most of it in the other room. That's crazy about your phone. I know you were frustrated. No pumpkin, just regular rice krispies shaped like pumpkins. The stem was a tootsie roll and the leaves were made of green fruit roll ups.

  4. Great week! Even with that tough run in the wind! That's crazy but you got it done! Great job!

  5. I also watched the NYC marathon, then hunkered down and made spaghetti sauce. This week was a busy, but slow week. One I hit Wednesday morning, I was longing for the weekend. I don't have students, but crazy happens here too with a full moon.

  6. No, I was too busy watching Scandal yesterday. :) And sleeping through a lot of it anyway.

Sounds like you had a great week of training!

I do try not to stress much about the bad runs. I find I do better if I have a few of them. As long as I'm not injured, that's really the main thing.

    1. Thank you! I think the tough runs make us appreciate the good ones more.

  7. You are doing great with your training and you'll do fine in Memphis too. Isn't it wild about how people act during the full moon? Those pumpkin treats look so cute! I bet the kids loved them! I appreciate the kinds words posted to my FB account this weekend and appreciate you linking up with us. I've got 15 miles on my schedule next weekend and have got to get creative on a route. What do you do different to get in all your miles? I get bored so easy :(

    1. I'm glad you had a great weekend! Your costume turned out cute for the Jazz Half and the Saints won! It doesn't get much better than that. I run the same loop around my neighborhood. It gets boring at times, but I like being close to home to refuel and check in with Michael. I download new music often!

  9. Nice job with your training this week- especially that 19 miler! I worked in schools for about 8 years and could definitely tell when it was a full moon!! Glad you made it through the week:)

  11. Nice job on your 19-miler!

I did a science project in high school comparing the phases of the moon to the number of arrests that night by the local police, so I'm not surprised that your student get a little more difficult to control during full moons. :-)

    1. Thank you! It was so inspiring watching the NYC marathon. I've read several articles about parts I didn't see. I read one today about a man with Cerebral Palsy whose wheel broke loose on his wheel chair on the 12 mile. A group of people lifted the back and pushed him 14 miles to the finish like pushing a wheel barrel.

  13. Thank you! We have a lot of sweets left. I'm having a hard time resisting. It's so tough between now and New Years.

  14. I definitely need to get my running going again. It has been a no-show the past days.
Thank you so much for sharing how you break down your training.
    Have a fabulous day!

    1. Thank you! Sometimes your body just needs a rest from running. I'm sure you've been staying active in other ways. I need to do more than just run.

  16. I never would have thought about the full moon and Halloween and what that does to kids, LOL The schools here did the term end around that time, and I know the kids were out of school for a mini fall break those days, I wonder if they pre-planned that n purpose to avoid it, LOL
Great job on your training week, 19 miles very awesome! I wish I was in marathon training right now, I do miss those long runs!

    1. Sounds like your schools time the break perfectly! I only have my 20 miler left before starting my taper. My training has gone well so far, but I'm definitely looking forward to cutting back some in the next few weeks.

  17. Solid week of training! It's nice when you have a long run that gives you a real confidence boost - good to look back on that leading up and on race day. Those pumpkin rice krispie treats are cute! I didn't get to watch the NYC Marathon live (I was driving to WV and celebrating my Nana's 90th birthday during it), but I recorded it and watched it this past week. So inspirational!

  18. Thank you! I just hope my 20 miler this weekend goes well, too. That's my last big long run before starting my taper. I've read a lot of stories after the NYC Marathon that are very inspirational. 6
