CCAP 5K Race Recap

February 22, 2014

This was my 2nd year running the CCAP 5K. This is my favorite local 5K, and I will run it every year that I am able. This run benefits the Children's Center Adult Program, a day habilitation center for young adults with disabilities. It is sponsored by our local running club, River Region Runners. It is a smaller run with both run and walk divisions. Several of the clients and their families participate in this event. Participants wear special bibs in support of the clients.

I ran in support of Team Zac and Team Eric. I went to daycare with Zac when I was just a baby. We've remained close with him and his mother over the years. He's attended the program for years. I know Eric from high school. He had just started the program in the summer of 2013.

Eric surprised me with a kiss before the race. I hadn't seen him in almost ten years.

I talked my friend Minerva into running this race with me. We became good friends in college and we worked retail together while we finished school. She's now a teacher, too.

This course has a few small inclines, but it mostly flat and fast. I started out way too fast, trying to keep up with Minerva. I couldn't believe I clocked my first mile in 7:47! My first sub 8:00 minute mile. After the first mile, I looked around me and realized that there was only one female in front of me. Unbelievable! I was the second female!

The first female was too far ahead. I knew there was no way I could catch up to her. I tried hard to hold on to second. My pace was slowing. I clocked the second mile in 8:17. Over my shoulder I could see the third female gaining on me. She was right beside me at the 2.5 mile mark and I surged to keep ahead of her. She backed down.

I could see the finish line up ahead. I raced down the hill, clocking my third mile in 8:07. Only seconds from the finish line, the third female passed me. I gave one last kick, but it was too late. She got me by one second! I was still thrilled to get 3rd overall female and a new 5K PR of 24:57!

My Mom and Minerva had an awesome race too, both finishing 2nd in their age groups.

The director of CCAP presented me with my award.

It was great catching up with him after so many years.
